Care homes, day centres and student travel

Earlier this week I wrote, along with all the other MPs in Derbyshire, to the Conservative leader of Derbyshire County Council, Cllr Barry Lewis, asking them to reconsider their plans to close local care homes and day centres for older people.

In the High Peak this proposal would affect Whitestones Care Home as well as Eccles Fold in Chapel-en-le-Frith, the Jubilee Centre in New Mills and Queens Court in Buxton.

We have offered to meet and work with the county council to find a way to avoid these proposed cuts to vital local services.

I was elected on a promised to ensure High Peak gets its fair share. A responsibility I take seriously. Like many of you I am concerned that we are the county hall’s priority. Under its current Conservative leadership, they seem more interested in playing party politics, when they could be working constructively with us.
The loser of this approach is the most vulnerable in our communities.

From older people getting the right care within and near to their family, friends and community ties to those trying to get on in life through education, this petty politics has a negative impact on their daily lives.

I’ve been working with the Mayor of the East Midlands to delivery free student travel to those who must travel out of High Peak into Greater Manchester to access post-16 education. We have a deal with GM Mayor Andy Burnham. We have the cash from EM Mayor Claire Ward. We have the mandate from our elections. But Barry Lewis is inexplicably trying to make High Peak family’s life hard and deny them their fair share. I will be working with whoever and wherever to fight for High Peak’s fair share!
