High Peak MP encourages local people to apply to become Tour de France Femmes volunteers

High Peak MP Jon Pearce is encouraging people to sign up to become volunteer “JOY Makers” as High Peak prepares to host part of the historic Grand Départs of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in summer 2027.

A nationwide search has officially launched to recruit 9,000 volunteers across Scotland, England and Wales to support the world-famous cycling events, which are expected to become Britain’s most-attended sporting event.

The volunteers, known as JOY Makers, will play a key role in welcoming fans, supporting local communities and helping the six stages of the races run smoothly. Applications are now open for anyone aged 16 and over, with no previous volunteering experience required and full training provided.

Jon Pearce MP said:

“Hosting part of the Tour de France Femmes in High Peak is a huge moment for our area and a brilliant opportunity for local people to get involved in a truly historic event.

“The JOY Makers programme is a fantastic chance for people of all ages to meet new people, gain new skills and be part of something special. I’m particularly pleased to see opportunities for young people through the Readiness to Work scheme, helping them build confidence and valuable experience for the future.

“I’d encourage anyone interested to apply and play their part in bringing the joy of cycling to communities across the country.”

As part of the programme, volunteers aged 18 to 25 will also be eligible for the new Readiness to Work scheme, offering employability skills training and career mentoring alongside volunteering experience.

The initiative forms part of the wider JOY social impact programme, which aims to create a lasting legacy from the 2027 Grands Départs by encouraging volunteering, supporting communities and promoting cycling participation across Britain.

British Cycling and partners are also calling for £30 million of government investment in cycling infrastructure to build on the success of the Places to Ride programme, which has already delivered more than 150 community cycling projects across England.

Applications to become a JOY Maker are open until 1 September 2026.
