High Peak MP Jon Pearce has welcomed the Government’s decision to create a new Derbyshire North Council as part of the biggest overhaul of local government in a generation.
The Government has today confirmed that, from April 2028, High Peak will become part of a new northern Derbyshire unitary authority alongside Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, Northeast Derbyshire, Bolsover and northern part of Amber Valley.
The changes will replace the current two-tier system with a single council responsible for all local services, bringing them together under one roof and simplifying how residents access services.
Throughout the Local Government Reorganisation process, Jon Pearce MP supported the proposal to create a Derbyshire North Council, a position also backed by Labour councillors at High Peak Borough Council.
Jon Pearce MP said:
“Today’s announcement brings certainty about the future shape of local government in Derbyshire.
“I am pleased that the Government have approved the proposal for a new Derbyshire North council, that High Peak Labour Councillors and I backed.
“There were advantages and disadvantages to every option considered, but I believe this delivers the best outcome for High Peak. The key now is to ensure this new council recognises the importance and unique nature of the communities in High Peak and delivers the best possible public services.
“For too long there have been poor relations in Derbyshire, we are always the first to receive cuts and the last to receive investment, there is no better evidence of this than Reforms attempt to close Glossop Tip.
“Nothing will change immediately, High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council will continue delivering services until the new arrangements come into effect in April 2028.
“I will continue working hard throughout the transition to make sure High Peak’s interests remain at the heart of the new council, that residents see the benefits of these changes in the years ahead, and that High Peak gets its fair share.”
The new Derbyshire North Council is expected to take over responsibility for all local government services from April 2028.

🎆 Earlier this year, I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on the sale of fireworks to raise the concerns that so many High Peak residents have shared with me.
During the debate, I highlighted the campaign led by my constituent, Robert Branch, whose petition helped bring this issue before Parliament. As a fellow dog owner, I know just how much distress irresponsible firework use can cause for pets, as well as veterans, young children and others in our communities.
I'm pleased the Government has now launched a consultation on fireworks legislation, and I hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to have their say.
