This Wednesday, the King’s Speech will set out the government’s priorities for the next parliamentary session and the next stage of Labour’s plan to deliver change for working people across the country.
In this new parliamentary session, the Labour government will be focusing on issues that residents regularly raise with me on the doorstep and in my advice surgeries. SEND reform is likely to be a major priority, which matters enormously to families across High Peak who are struggling to access the support their children need. Road safety legislation is also expected, alongside the Railways Bill, which will help improve reliability and coordination across the transport network that so many local commuters rely on. The government will continue reforms to the NHS as part of the 10 Year Health Plan, alongside measures to strengthen national security and modernise public services.
Also, the government will work on brining the steel industry into public ownership. As well as, strengthening our relationship with Europe aiming to allow British young people more freedom on working and studying abroad, and we will also be working on creating more apprenticeships improving opportunities for young people across the county.
As Parliament prepares for a new session, it is also a chance to reflect on what Labour has already achieved in our short time in government – and what those changes mean for people here in High Peak.
One of the biggest reforms has been the Renters’ Rights Act. More than 6,000 people in High Peak rent their homes, and for too long many have faced insecurity, poor conditions and the fear of unfair eviction. The Act strengthens protections for tenants by banning no-fault evictions, stopping bidding wars and only allowing landlords to ask for one month’s rent upfront maximum.
We have also introduced free breakfast clubs in primary schools. Across High Peak four schools now offer government funded free breakfast clubs. For families facing pressure on household budgets, this will make a real difference. It means children can start the school day ready to learn while helping parents with the cost of living and making mornings easier for working families.
Another major change has been scrapping the two-child benefit cap. Too many families were being pushed into hardship by a policy that punished children for the circumstances they were born into. Nearly 1,500 families in High Peak will benefit from the removal of the cap, which will help lift children out of poverty and provide real support to struggling families here in High Peak and across the country.
Labour has also delivered the Employment Rights Act. This is one of the biggest upgrades to workers’ rights in a generation and I’m proud to be part of a small group of MPs to steer it through parliament. The changes include stronger protections from unfair dismissal, improved sick pay rights, better parental leave and action against exploitative zero-hours contracts. In a constituency like High Peak, where people work across manufacturing, retail, hospitality, care and public services, these changes matter enormously.
Alongside this, Labour has increased both the minimum wage and the National Living Wage, helping ensure that work pays and that people who work hard can earn a decent living.
There is still much more to do, and I know many families are still feeling pressure after years of rising costs and stretched public services. But these changes show the difference a Labour government can make.
As your MP, I will continue working every day to make sure High Peak benefits from the change this government was elected to deliver.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 💜
Small actions really can make a big difference. Checking in on a loved one, taking time for yourself, speaking openly about mental health, or supporting someone who may be struggling can all help change lives.
When we take action individually, together we build a movement for better mental health - one where nobody feels alone and everyone feels supported.
Let’s continue creating kinder, more connected communities across High Peak where people feel able to talk, seek help and support one another.
