High Peak MP welcomes expansion of Winter Fuel Payments

Jon Pearce, Labour MP for High Peak, has welcomed the Government’s decision to expand eligibility for winter fuel payments, calling it a “much-needed step forward” that will benefit millions of pensioners struggling with rising energy bills.

Following sustained pressure from constituents and campaigners, the Chancellor today confirmed that the income threshold for winter fuel payments will rise, allowing around 9 million pensioners to receive extra help during the coldest months. From this winter, pensioners with annual incomes of up to £35,000 will now qualify for the payment.

Reacting to the announcement, Jon Pearce MP said:

“The Government’s decision to expand winter fuel payments is a positive and much-needed step forward. By raising the income threshold, around 9 million pensioners will now receive vital support to help with energy costs during the colder months. From this winter, pensioners with annual incomes up to £35,000 will qualify for winter fuel payments.”

“I want to sincerely thank everyone in High Peak who contacted me about this issue – your input has been instrumental.”

Mr Pearce has long argued for a more inclusive approach to winter support, repeatedly raising the issue in Parliament and with ministers. He added:

“As your MP, I have been campaigning for a fairer system and this change is fundamentally about fairness. Support should go to those who genuinely need it – not to millionaires or people who choose to live overseas during winter. This is a sensible and targeted reform that ensures more pensioners can keep warm in their homes without the fear of unaffordable heating bills.”

Labour has consistently called for stronger support for vulnerable groups during the cost-of-living crisis, and today’s announcement marks a significant policy shift after months of public pressure.
