Jon Pearce MP for High Peak, has warned of an escalating wildfire risk across the constituency, following new analysis identifying High Peak as the most vulnerable area in the country.
The Moorland Association has described the situation starkly, saying: “High Peak is the most vulnerable constituency to wildfires. We face a wildfire crisis. Last year was by far the worst we have had.” The National Fire Chiefs Council has also issued a warning that restrictions on reducing vegetation fuel loads are putting both firefighters and the public at risk.
In response, Jon Pearce MP is renewing his calls for stronger preventative measures to protect local communities, wildlife, and the Peak District landscape. As part of this effort, he has once again written to major retailers urging them to stop the sale of disposable barbecues in High Peak – marking the second consecutive year of this campaign.
Disposable barbecues are widely recognised as a significant fire risk, particularly during warmer months when moorland areas become dry and highly flammable.
Jon Pearce MP said:
“High Peak’s moorlands are not only a treasured part of our natural heritage, but they are also increasingly at risk. Being identified as the most vulnerable constituency to wildfires is deeply concerning, but sadly not surprising given what we’ve seen in recent years.
“I have been working closely with local stakeholders to push for stronger protections, and I am again calling on retailers to act responsibly by ending the sale of disposable barbecues in our area. This is a simple, practical step that could help prevent devastating fires.
“We cannot afford to be careless. Protecting our communities, our environment, and those who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe must be a top priority.”
Jon Pearce MP is also urging everyone to take simple steps to reduce the risk of wildfires, including avoiding open flames on moorland, not using disposable barbecues, and never leaving glass bottles or litter behind, which can increase fire risk. Visitors should stick to designated paths, dispose of waste responsibly, and report any signs of fire immediately. Protecting High Peak is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play in caring for our local environment.
Jon Pearce MP has also backed local initiatives to raise awareness of wildfire risks and has supported efforts to improve land management and fire prevention strategies across the constituency.
