Jon Pearce MP urges residents to fight plans to close Glossop tip as consultation begins

High Peak MP Jon Pearce is calling on residents across Glossop and the wider High Peak to make their voices heard as the 12-week public consultation on the future of the Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre officially opens.

Nearly 4000 people have signed Jon Pearce MP’s petition to keep Glossop Tip open, and Jon is urging them to get involved with the consultation too.

The consultation follows controversial proposals put forward by Reform-run Derbyshire County Council to close the site – a move that has sparked strong concern among local communities who rely on the facility.

Jon Pearce MP has criticised the plans, arguing they are based on inaccurate claims about usage of the site. Reform’s dodgy data says that the tip is “barely used” and that seven out of ten users travel from outside the area.

However, a recent visit made by Jon Pearce MP alongside other Labour councillors and local residents to the site in early April tells a very different story. During a short period of time, more than 50 vehicles were seen using the facility, with only two of those spoken to coming from outside the High Peak. Labour councillors and residents carried on surveying for over a week and saw similar results every day. This directly challenges the justification being used to support the proposed closure.

Jon Pearce MP is now urging residents to take action during the consultation period by doing three things: registering their vehicles to continue using the site, signing Jon Pearce’s online petition to keep the tip open, and responding to the consultation to ensure their views are heard.

Jon Pearce MP said:

“This consultation is our chance to stop Reform’s rubbish idea to close Glossop Tip. They have made up some dodgy data to justify their plans to close our tip, but we all know this site is well used and valued by local people. I’m urging everyone to take a few minutes to do these three things: register their vehicle, sign the petition, and respond to the consultation so we can keep this vital service open for residents in High Peak.”

Please be aware that the A57 Snake Pass will be fully closed 🚧 24 hours a day from Monday 15 June until Friday 3 July while major investigation and repair works take place at the Doctor’s Gate landslip site.

The closure will affect the route between Glossop and Bamford Reservoir.

These works are essential to help find a long-term solution after ongoing ground movement and cracking along the road. While the closure is in place, teams will also be carrying out:
🛣️ Pothole repairs
🧹 Litter picking
🌧️ Drain clearing
🌳 Cutting back overgrown trees and hedges
🚸 Pavement repairs
🪧 Cleaning and replacing damaged signs

A signed diversion route will be in place, and access for residents, businesses, farmers and organisations along the route will be maintained.

I know this will be frustrating for many people who regularly use Snake Pass, but public safety must come first. These works involve heavy machinery and drilling equipment operating across the carriageway, and they are vital to securing the future of this route.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding while this important work is carried out🙏
